Rafting Season Status

River rafting in Rishikesh is governed by the Uttarakhand government's seasonal ban. The ban runs from approximately 1 July to 30 September (exact dates vary annually based on the Ganga's water level — the government announces the ban each year).

2026 rafting season: The rafting season typically opens in late September (post-monsoon clearance). All four stretches (Brahmapuri, Shivpuri, Marine Drive, Kaudiyala) reopen once the government clearance is issued. Shivpuri is usually the first to reopen; Kaudiyala may open later depending on water levels. For the current exact rafting status, contact: Rishikesh White Water Rafting Association or your hotel in Rishikesh. See rafting guide for full information.

Road Conditions

Delhi–Rishikesh (NH-58): This national highway is maintained year-round and remains open in all seasons. In monsoon (July–August), occasional flooding near Roorkee or Haridwar can cause brief closures — check before travelling. The road is fully passable in winter without any special equipment.

Rishikesh–Neelkanth road (32 km): This forest road through Rajaji National Park is narrow and occasionally subject to landslide debris clearing in monsoon. Generally open year-round but check locally during August–September for any active landslide clearance work. The road is single-lane in sections — drive carefully.

Rishikesh → Kedarnath / Badrinath roads: The Char Dham highway (Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Kedarnath/Badrinath) is subject to landslide closures during July–August monsoon. The Kedarnath road and Badrinath road both typically close in November (snow) and reopen in May (Char Dham Yatra opening). Check the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) website for current road alerts before planning the onward journey to Char Dham.

Char Dham Yatra 2026

Rishikesh is the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra — the pilgrimage to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri. The Yatra typically opens in late April or May and closes in November (before snowfall). During Yatra season (May–June, September–October), Rishikesh is extremely busy — pilgrim traffic on the NH-7 corridor is very heavy, particularly on weekends. If your trip is not Char Dham-related, plan accommodation and advance bookings more carefully during May–June. See Rishikesh to Kedarnath guide.

International Yoga Festival (March 2026)

The International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan ashram (March 1–7 annually) is Asia's largest yoga event, attracting 1,000–2,000 participants from across the world. Rishikesh hotels fill completely for this period — if planning to be in Rishikesh in early March, book accommodation at least 4–6 weeks in advance. Entry to the festival: registration through Parmarth Niketan's official website. The Ganga Aarti during the festival week is attended by 1,500–2,000 people — arrive 60 minutes early for a front-row position during festival week.

Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
  • Book accommodation in advance for peak periods: International Yoga Festival (March 1–7), Diwali–Chhath (October/November), and Holi weekends see Rishikesh and all guesthouses fill completely. Book 3–6 weeks ahead for these dates.
  • Post-monsoon is the best time to arrive without planning anxiety: The October–November period after the monsoon ends is Rishikesh's best weather but also its first peak season. Weekends are busy; weekdays are more manageable. Early October is the best balance — good water for rafting, clear skies for Kunjapuri and fewer crowds than November.

FAQs
Can I go to Rishikesh in July?
Yes, Rishikesh is open in July and can be visited, but with important limitations: river rafting is banned from approximately July 1 through September 30 (the exact dates depend on the Ganga's annual flood level). The Rishikesh–Neelkanth road and other forest roads may have landslide-related delays. The city itself (ashrams, Ganga Aarti, cafes, yoga) remains fully functional. July is also the wettest month — carry rain gear. The positive: July is the cheapest month to visit (40–50% lower hotel prices) and has almost no foreign tourists — for a spiritual retreat (yoga + ashrams + Ganga Aarti) without any rafting, July is a perfectly valid choice.
Are roads to Rishikesh safe in monsoon?
The Delhi–Rishikesh highway (NH-58) is generally safe and open year-round including monsoon — it is a national highway maintained by NHAI. Road disruptions during monsoon are most likely on the secondary roads: the Rishikesh–Neelkanth forest road and the Char Dham highway toward Kedarnath and Badrinath. If you're travelling only to Rishikesh (not continuing to Char Dham), the Delhi→Haridwar→Rishikesh route on NH-58 is reliable in all seasons. Check USDMA alerts if you're continuing onward on Uttarakhand hill roads.
