The Route: NH-58 (Recommended)

Delhi departure: From Delhi, take NH-58 (Meerut Expressway) toward Haridwar. The route exits Delhi via NH-9 or NH-24 depending on your starting point in Delhi — from Ghaziabad, join NH-58 after crossing the Hindon. The route is well-signed for Haridwar/Rishikesh from all major Delhi points.

Meerut–Muzaffarnagar–Roorkee section: This 120-km middle section of the drive is the fastest — 4-lane NH-58 with minimal traffic except on Delhi weekend exodus afternoons (Friday 3–8 PM, Saturday 6–10 AM). Average speed 80–100 km/hr. Petrol stations at regular intervals (Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee). No specific stops needed here — drive through.

Haridwar (suggested 20-minute stop): At Haridwar, detour 10 minutes to the Har Ki Pauri ghat to see the Ganga in the iconic pilgrimage setting — the ghats with their steps, the river, the evening aarti setup. Even if you don't stay in Haridwar, a 20-minute look at Har Ki Pauri is worth it. Rejoin NH-7 and drive 24 km to Rishikesh.

Haridwar to Rishikesh (24 km, 30–45 min): The final section of the drive — along the east bank of the Ganga through small towns (Motichur, Raiwala). The Ganga appears frequently on the right side of the road. This is the most scenic part of the entire Delhi-to-Rishikesh route. The road enters Rishikesh from the south, arriving in the Muni Ki Reti area.

Best Stops En Route

Muzaffarnagar — tea break (1.5 hrs from Delhi): The highway dhabas on NH-58 near Muzaffarnagar are good for chai and samosas (₹30–₆₀). The most popular truck-dhaba strip on this route. Quick 10-minute stop.

Roorkee — petrol + lunch option (3.5 hrs from Delhi): Roorkee is the halfway point. Several clean restaurants near the IIT Roorkee bypass for a proper lunch (₹100–₁₅₀). Also has CNG/petrol stations if needed.

Haridwar — Ganga darshan + chai (30 min): As described above — a worthwhile stop to see the Har Ki Pauri ghats before the final 24-km run to Rishikesh.

FAQs
How long is the Delhi to Rishikesh drive?
The Delhi to Rishikesh drive is 239 km and takes 5 to 6 hours including a short break stop. Without breaks, the drive can be done in 4.5 hours in ideal traffic (early morning, no weekend congestion). With Friday evening traffic out of Delhi or Sunday evening return traffic, the same drive can take 7–8 hours. The most efficient option is a Friday night departure (leave Delhi after 7 PM) or a Saturday predawn departure (4–5 AM).
Which route is better: via Haridwar or via Saharanpur?
The NH-58 route via Haridwar is the standard and recommended route — 4-lane highway for most of the distance, well-signed, and more petrol/food options. The Saharanpur route (NH-72/73) is slightly shorter in distance (~220 km) but has more congested roads through Saharanpur city and the Rajaji forest buffer area. Most Delhi drivers use NH-58 via Haridwar. The Yamuna Expressway plus NH-58 junction option (via Agra Expressway then across to Muzaffarnagar) is recommended if starting from South or Central Delhi.
