Complete Mussoorie Bike Trip Guide
Delhi to Mussoorie Route for Bikes
Recommended route: Delhi → NH-58 via Meerut bypass → Muzaffarnagar → Roorkee → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Dehradun → Rajpur Road → Mussoorie
This NH-58 route is the classic Delhi–Mussoorie road and is most familiar to motorcyclists. The road quality is generally good; the transition from plains riding (NH-58) to hill road (Dehradun → Mussoorie) is a highlight of the route — the Rajpur Road ascent from Dehradun to Mussoorie has 25+ switchback turns over 35 km of climbing.
Alternative (faster but less scenic): Delhi → Yamuna Expressway → NH-19 → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Dehradun → Mussoorie. The expressway section (165 km) is faster on a motorcycle but less interesting — it is designed for maximum throughput, not enjoyment. Most experienced riders prefer the NH-58 for its character.

The Rajpur Road Ascent on a Bike
The 35-km Rajpur Road climb from Dehradun to Mussoorie is the highlight of the bike trip. The road has 25+ hairpin turns and climbs from 640m to 2,005m over 35 km — a steady, continuous ascent. The views back toward the Doon Valley from the upper section (above Jharipani) are magnificent. On a motorcycle, the switchbacks are enjoyable at moderate speed; the road is well-surfaced but narrow in places. Watch for oncoming vehicles on blind curves. The upper section (last 10 km into Mussoorie) can be slippery in rain; reduce speed significantly on wet surface.
Best Bikes for the Mussoorie Ride
- 125–150cc commuter bikes (Honda Shine, Hero Splendor etc): Adequate for the flat NH sections; may struggle on continuous climbing in the Rajpur Road upper section if carrying a pillion. Comfortable cruising speed 70–80 km/h on highway.
- 200–250cc bikes (Royal Enfield Meteor, Bajaj Pulsar, Honda CB200X): The optimal range for the Delhi–Mussoorie ride. Enough power for the climb without being unnecessarily heavy for the hill road. Comfortable two-up riding on highways.
- 350–500cc bikes (Royal Enfield Classic/Bullet, KTM Duke 390): The most popular choice for long-distance Indian motorcycle touring. The Royal Enfield Classic 350 is by far the most common bike on this route — its torquey engine handles the Rajpur Road climb well and the ride quality is comfortable for 6–7 hours.
- Adventure bikes (Royal Enfield Himalayan, KTM 390 Adventure): Well-suited for the terrain; the upright riding position is comfortable for long distances. Good choice if you plan to extend the trip to more adventurous territory beyond Mussoorie.
Best Time for a Mussoorie Bike Trip
October–November: The best weather for biking — clear, dry, mild temperature range (15–22°C in Delhi, 8–15°C in Mussoorie). Post-monsoon clarity means the Himalayan views on the Rajpur Road ascent are at their finest.
March–April: Spring riding — pleasant temperatures throughout, spring flowers in the hills, manageable traffic. Good visibility.
Avoid July–August: Monsoon rain makes the Rajpur Road slippery, reduces visibility and creates landslide risk on the hill section. Not recommended for biking.
Winter (January–February): The plains riding is fine; the Rajpur Road in snowfall can be extremely dangerous on a motorcycle. If riding to Mussoorie in winter, confirm road conditions before the hill section.
How to Reach Mussoorie
By bike from Delhi: 285–295 km, 6–7.5 hours. For those travelling without personal bikes, rental is available in Mussoorie (₹500–₈₀₀/day for 125–150cc) for local exploration of the ridge. See Mussoorie road trip guide for car route details.
Budget, Hotels & Travel Tips
- Fuel stops: Fill up in Delhi. Next reliable fuel: Meerut (70 km), Muzaffarnagar (120 km), Haridwar (207 km), Dehradun (255 km). No petrol on the Rajpur Road climb above Rajpur town.
- Gear: Full-face helmet, riding jacket (with armour), gloves, ankle-length boots. A high-visibility vest for night/fog sections. Temperature drops significantly on the Rajpur Road upper section — pack a warm layer accessible at a stop.
- Motorcycle parking in Mussoorie: Bike parking is available near Kulri and Library end. Bikes can usually access further up the Mall Road than cars. Ask at your hotel about dedicated bike parking.
- Night riding on Rajpur Road: Not recommended. The road is poorly lit; mist and fog are common; visibility of oncoming traffic on switchbacks is very limited. Aim to reach Mussoorie before dark.
