Overview
No airport exists in the Garhwal Himalaya that is near the Raj Jat route — the terrain makes commercial aviation impractical close to Karnaprayag or Wan. The nearest commercial airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), which offers daily flights to Delhi and occasional services to other cities. From Delhi's IGI, you can reach Dehradun by flight (45 min), Haridwar by train (3h 45m via Shatabdi), or Rishikesh by road (4–5 hours). Helicopter charter to Nauti is theoretically possible but rarely done for pilgrim transport.

Flights to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun)
Jolly Grant Airport (IATA: DED) is the most practical fly-in option. Scheduled services include:
- Delhi (IGI) to Dehradun (DED): IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India — multiple daily flights, 45 minutes, fares ₹3,000–₹8,000 depending on advance booking. This is the most frequent route.
- Mumbai to Dehradun: 1–2 daily services via IndiGo or Air India, 2h 10m, fares ₹5,000–₹12,000. Direct flights are not always available; check current schedules as routes change seasonally.
- Bengaluru to Dehradun: Limited direct services; most require a Delhi transit. Budget 6–8 hours from Bengaluru to Dehradun by air including connection.
- Chennai / Hyderabad / Kolkata to Dehradun: No direct service. Route: city → Delhi → Dehradun. Total 5–7 hours including connection.
Book flights 3–4 months before the Raj Jat — Delhi to Dehradun fares spike during the August–September pilgrim season and last-minute fares can be ₹15,000+ one-way.
From Jolly Grant Airport to Karnaprayag/Wan
From the airport (25 km from Dehradun city centre, near Rishikesh on the NH-58 side):
- Airport to Rishikesh: 30 km, 45 min by taxi (₹700–₹1,200). Pre-arrange through the taxi counter inside the airport or via a Rishikesh-based hotel.
- Airport to Karnaprayag: 220 km, 5.5–6.5 hours by private taxi (₹6,000–₹9,000). This goes via Rishikesh on NH-58.
- Airport to Wan: 280 km, 7.5–8.5 hours by private taxi (₹9,000–₹13,000). Requires a vehicle comfortable on mountain roads — specify this when booking.
International Participants
The Nanda Devi Raj Jat attracts Uttarakhandi diaspora from the UK, USA, UAE and Australia. For international participants, Delhi's IGI Airport is the primary hub — well-connected from Heathrow, Dubai, Singapore, New York and other major international airports. From Delhi, the most efficient route is to connect to the Jolly Grant Dehradun flight (45 min) and then take a pre-arranged taxi to Rishikesh or Karnaprayag. Alternatively, overnight in Delhi and take the 6 AM Shatabdi to Haridwar (3h 45m), giving you the full day for the onward mountain journey.
History & Culture
The remoteness of the Raj Jat from major transport infrastructure is not incidental — the mountains that make it hard to reach are the same mountains that have preserved the Raj Jat's traditions intact through colonial and post-Independence periods. The geography of the Garhwal Himalaya has always been the yatra's most reliable protector, keeping its rituals, its community structure, and its meaning free from the commercialisation that has altered other major pilgrimages.
Tips
- Fly into Dehradun, not Delhi, if your origin has a connection — the Jolly Grant flight saves 4–5 hours of Delhi–Rishikesh road travel and sidesteps Delhi's chaotic traffic.
- Pre-book your airport-to-Rishikesh taxi before flying — Jolly Grant's taxi stand can be overwhelmed during peak season and having a confirmed booking saves negotiation on arrival.
- International participants should factor 2–3 days of acclimatisation — flying directly from a low-altitude city (London, Dubai, Sydney) and immediately driving to Wan (2,440m) is too fast. Spend a night in Rishikesh (372m) and a night in Karnaprayag (788m) before reaching Wan.
FAQs
- Is there a helicopter service to Nauti or Wan for the Raj Jat?
- Helicopter services to Nauti or Wan are not a standard commercial offering. The Uttarakhand government has operated helipads at several Char Dham sites but the Raj Jat route villages do not have regular helicopter pads for commercial passenger service. During disaster relief or medical emergency operations, government helicopters do reach the area. For VVIP access during the Raj Jat itself, the state government sometimes operates restricted helicopter sorties to Nauti. For ordinary participants, road and trek are the only options.
- Can I fly to Pithoragarh or Uttarkashi which might be closer?
- No — these airports (Pithoragarh/Naini Saini and Gauchar/Chinyalisaur) are small, operate seasonally with limited aircraft types, and are not actually closer to the Raj Jat route when road distances are factored in. Jolly Grant (Dehradun) or Delhi IGI remain the practical air gateways.
