Nanda Devi Raj Jat from Delhi

Delhi is 430 km from Nauti village and approximately 480 km from Wan village (the Raj Jat trekking trailhead). Here is the complete step-by-step travel guide — by road, train connection and bus — including estimated costs and timings.

Overview

Delhi is the most common departure point for Raj Jat participants from outside Uttarakhand — the city has the largest concentration of the Garhwali diaspora outside Uttarakhand itself, a major international airport (Indira Gandhi International), and the best road and rail connectivity to the Garhwal Himalaya. The journey from Delhi to the Raj Jat trailhead at Wan takes approximately 14–16 hours by the fastest route, typically done overnight to arrive fresh in the morning.

Option 1: By Private Car (Recommended for Groups)

Route: Delhi → NH-58 (National Highway 58) → Meerut → Roorkee → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar (Garhwal) → Rudraprayag → Karnaprayag → Nauti (10 km off NH-58) or Mundoli → Wan.

The NH-58 Badrinath highway is the primary arterial road through the Garhwal Himalaya and is generally well-maintained. Key driving notes:

  • Delhi to Haridwar (220 km): expressway section, 3–4 hours
  • Haridwar to Rishikesh (25 km): 45 minutes
  • Rishikesh to Rudraprayag (150 km): mountain road begins after Devprayag, 4–5 hours
  • Rudraprayag to Karnaprayag (35 km): 1 hour on NH-58
  • Karnaprayag to Mundoli (48 km): state highway, increasingly narrow, 2 hours
  • Mundoli to Wan (12 km): rough mountain road, 45 minutes–1 hour

Night driving in the mountains after Rishikesh is not recommended — landslide risk, no street lighting, and narrow roads make nighttime driving on the mountain section dangerous. Leave Delhi by 5–6 AM to reach Karnaprayag by late afternoon, rest, then proceed to Wan the next morning.

Option 2: Train + Bus/Jeep

Step 1 — Delhi to Haridwar by train: Multiple daily trains from Delhi (NDLS, DLI, HWH) to Haridwar. Fastest option: Shatabdi Express (3 hours 45 minutes, ₹900–₹1,500). Budget option: Jan Shatabdi (5 hours, ₹250–₹600). Jan Shatabdi and Mussoorie Express also serve Rishikesh (slightly longer).

Step 2 — Haridwar/Rishikesh to Karnaprayag by bus: GMOU (Garhwal Motor Owners Union) buses run from Rishikesh Bus Stand (near ISBT Rishikesh) to Karnaprayag — departures roughly every 45 minutes from 5 AM to 7 PM. Duration: 5–6 hours. Fare: ₹200–₹350. Shared jeeps also available from the Rishikesh bus stand (faster, ₹400–₹600/seat).

Step 3 — Karnaprayag to Wan: Shared jeeps from Karnaprayag to Mundoli (₹100–₹150/seat, 2 hours) and from Mundoli to Wan (₹100–₹200/seat, 1 hour). Or hire a private jeep from Karnaprayag directly to Wan (₹2,500–₹3,500).

Option 3: Overnight UPSRTC/GMOU Bus from Delhi

Several state and private buses operate overnight routes from Delhi (Kashmere Gate ISBT or Anand Vihar ISBT) to Rishikesh, Srinagar (Garhwal) and occasionally to Karnaprayag directly during the pilgrimage season. These depart at 8–10 PM and arrive at Rishikesh by 4–5 AM or Karnaprayag by 8–9 AM. Bus type: sleeper or semi-sleeper. Fare: ₹600–₹1,200. Book through RedBus, GMOU website or at the ISBT booking counter. During the Raj Jat, additional special buses are often operated; check GMOU and UPSRTC websites for Raj Jat season schedules.

History & Culture

The connection between Delhi and the Raj Jat is as old as the Garhwali diaspora in the capital. Delhi has one of the largest concentrations of Uttarakhand natives outside the state — the city's administrative structure, defense establishments, and private sector have absorbed several generations of Garhwali workers and professionals. The Raj Jat draws this community back in a way that few other events can. Chartered buses organised by Delhi-based Garhwali cultural associations are a feature of every Raj Jat — groups of 50–100 people boarding together in Delhi and arriving in Nauti or Wan as a community delegation, as their parents and grandparents did before them.

Tips
  • Leave Delhi no later than 6 AM for the drive — Delhi traffic adds 1–2 hours to any journey if you leave after 8 AM on a weekday.
  • Book train tickets 60–90 days in advance for travel during the Raj Jat period (August–September) — trains from Delhi to Haridwar/Rishikesh fill quickly during the peak yatra season.
  • Carry cash from Delhi — ATMs in Haridwar and Rishikesh are reliable; beyond that, ATM coverage becomes intermittent. Karnaprayag has ATMs but they can be out of service during the Raj Jat crowd period.
  • Delhi to Wan by private taxi costs ₹8,000–₹12,000 for a 4-seater (Bolero, Innova or Thar-type vehicle). Splitting with 3 others makes this reasonable at ₹2,000–₹3,000 per person one-way and eliminates the complexity of multiple connections.
FAQs
Is there a direct bus from Delhi to Karnaprayag (for Nauti)?
Yes — GMOU operates direct buses from Delhi (Kashmere Gate ISBT) to Karnaprayag during the summer pilgrimage season. During the Raj Jat year, these services increase in frequency. Check the GMOU website or the Kashmere Gate ISBT enquiry counter for current schedules. Journey time: 10–12 hours. Fare: ₹500–₹900. There is no direct Delhi–Wan service; Karnaprayag is the terminus from which onward connections to Mundoli and Wan are taken.
How much does a taxi from Delhi to Wan cost?
A private taxi (Innova, Crysta or similar 6–7 seater) from Delhi to Wan costs approximately ₹10,000–₹15,000 for the one-way journey. For a 4-member group, this is ₹2,500–₹3,750 per person — often competitive with combined train + bus costs when you factor in the comfort and time saved. For a Bolero or similar 4-seater, expect ₹8,000–₹12,000. Book through Rishikesh-based taxi operators who know the Wan road well (Delhi taxi drivers may not want to drive the Mundoli–Wan section).
