Overview
The Indian Railways network reaches as far as Rishikesh and Haridwar — the last towns on the plains before the Garhwal mountains rise steeply to the north. From either railhead, participants travel onward by bus, shared jeep or private taxi for the remaining 5–7 hours to Karnaprayag, and from there to Wan. Train travel is the most economical option for participants coming from Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai or Kolkata.

From Rishikesh/Haridwar to Nauti/Wan (Onward Road)
From Rishikesh station to Karnaprayag: Auto-rickshaw from Rishikesh station to the ISBT/bus stand (3 km, ₹50–₹100), then GMOU bus to Karnaprayag (5–6 hours, ₹200–₹350) or shared jeep (₹400–₹600/seat, 4–5 hours). History & Culture
The famous Nanda Devi Express (Train No. 12205) — which runs from Delhi to Kotdwar — takes its name from the goddess of the Raj Jat. The naming reflects the deep connection between the Garhwali homeland and the Indian railway system that links its diaspora to the mountains. During every Raj Jat, the trains on the Delhi–Haridwar and Delhi–Kotdwar routes carry not just passengers but entire delegations of Garhwali communities returning for the yatra — families who left the villages for the cities two or three generations ago, making this pilgrimage journey in trains named for the goddess of their ancestors.
Tips
- Book train tickets 60–90 days in advance for the Raj Jat period (August–September) — both Haridwar and Rishikesh trains are fully booked weeks before the yatra. If the train is full, try the Tatkal quota (available 1 day before) or the Premium Tatkal quota at a significantly higher price.
- Rishikesh is the better railhead for onward connections — more buses and shared jeeps to Karnaprayag. Haridwar is the better option if your train terminates there, as it's a larger junction with more platform connectivity.
- Night trains are practical for the Delhi–Haridwar stretch — a 10 PM departure arriving at 6 AM allows you to catch the first GMOU bus to Karnaprayag without losing a day.
FAQs
- Is there a train directly to Karnaprayag?
- No — there is no railway line to Karnaprayag or anywhere in the Garhwal Himalaya above Rishikesh and Kotdwar (roughly 400–500m altitude). The planned Rishikesh–Karnaprayag rail project is underway as of 2024 but will not be operational before the 2028 Raj Jat. For 2028, Rishikesh and Haridwar remain the nearest railheads, with onward road travel of 5–7 hours to Karnaprayag.
- Is the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag railway project real?
- Yes — the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Railway Project (125 km) has been approved and construction has been underway since 2018. It involves 17 tunnels (the longest being 14.6 km) and multiple bridges. The project target completion has been revised several times; current estimates suggest early 2030s. When completed, it will dramatically reduce travel time from Rishikesh to Karnaprayag from 5 hours to approximately 1.5 hours — but it will not be ready for the 2028 Raj Jat.
